Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands are located in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily. The Aeolian Islands are also sometimes referred to as the Lipari Islands, as the largest island in the cluster is Lipari.

Additional islands in this volcanic archipelago are Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea and Basiluzzo. In Italian, the islands are referred to as Isole Eolie, and the local islanders as Eolians. The island’s were named after the demi-god Aeolus/

Two of the islands have active volcanoes. The active volcanoes are on the Aeolian Islands of Stromboli and Vulcano.
